All day June 19, 2022  Juneteenth commemorates the effective end of slavery in the United States. Juneteenth (short for “June Nineteenth”) marks the day when federal troops arrived in Galveston, Texas in 1865 to take control of the state and ensure that all enslaved people be freed. The 225th General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) will commemorate Juneteenth with a special worship service Sunday, June 19. The Rev. Dr. J. Herbert Nelson, II, will be preaching. On this day, we also thank fathers and father figures (uncles, grandfathers) for the sacrifices they make, for embracing the responsibility of nurturing and raising children, and for devotion to their family.
